Gov. Josh Shapiro Provides Commentary for Pitt Basketball Broadcast

Governor Josh Shapiro provided live commentary during last night's Pitt-Syracuse basketball game on 93.7 The Fan.

Governor Josh Shapiro provided live commentary for 93.7 The Fan’s broadcast of the PittSyracuse men’s basketball game last night at Petersen Events Center, reports Christopher Cart for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Abington’s Shapiro joined play-by-play announcer Bill Hillgrove and radio analyst Curtis Aiken, a former Pitt basketball star. Aiken was had been named to Shapiro’s transition leadership board in 2022 and appointed to Pitt’s Board of Trustees in 2024.

Aiken, a guard for Pitt from 1983-1987, scored 1,200 career points and helped the Panthers secure their first-ever Big East regular season championship in 1987. He was later honored as a member of Pitt’s all-centennial team in 2006.

Shapiro’s daughter, Sophia, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in April 2024. Shapiro himself played basketball in high school, serving as a team captain at Akiba Hebrew Academy in Merion Station, Pa.

Shapiro’s guest appearance on the Pitt basketball broadcast highlights his personal and professional connections to the university and the sport.
