Governor Josh Shapiro provided live commentary for 93.7 The Fan’s broadcast of the Pitt–Syracuse men’s basketball game last night at Petersen Events Center, reports Christopher Cart for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Abington’s Shapiro joined play-by-play announcer Bill Hillgrove and radio analyst Curtis Aiken, a former Pitt basketball star. Aiken was had been named to Shapiro’s transition leadership board in 2022 and appointed to Pitt’s Board of Trustees in 2024.
Aiken, a guard for Pitt from 1983-1987, scored 1,200 career points and helped the Panthers secure their first-ever Big East regular season championship in 1987. He was later honored as a member of Pitt’s all-centennial team in 2006.
Shapiro’s daughter, Sophia, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in April 2024. Shapiro himself played basketball in high school, serving as a team captain at Akiba Hebrew Academy in Merion Station, Pa.
Shapiro’s guest appearance on the Pitt basketball broadcast highlights his personal and professional connections to the university and the sport.
