President Trump has announced the appointment of Governor Josh Shapiro to a significant council as part of the National Governors Association’s (NGA) winter meeting in Washington, writes Gilian McGoldrick for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Governors from across the nation are gathering for this annual event, which runs through Saturday. On Friday, Shapiro, along with several other governors, will visit the White House to meet with Trump. During this meeting, Shapiro plans to advocate for the importance of federal funding in Pennsylvania. These funds account for approximately 40% of the state’s annual spending.
Shapiro’s spokesperson, Manuel Bonder, emphasized that the governor will focus on promoting Pennsylvania and collaborating with leaders nationwide to create opportunities for the Commonwealth.
Other governors appointed to the panel include Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Youngkin and North Carolina Governor Josh Stein will cochair the council.
The council, established by a 2010 executive order, includes several federal officials such as the secretaries of defense and homeland security. It can be convened as needed by the cochairs or other federal officials to address critical military or disaster response issues. This collaboration aims to strengthen state and federal partnerships in addressing national challenges.
