Governor Josh Shapiro Reaffirms His View That America Is Ready for a Jewish President

Governor Josh Shapiro has reaffirmed in a recent interview that he believes America is ready for a Jewish president, a view he first shared a year ago, writes Alfred Lubrano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The New York Times article cited a statement the Abington native made to the paper last year, when he was asked whether America could elect a Jewish president in his lifetime and replied, “speaking broadly, absolutely.”

Shapiro has not yet announced any plans to run for president, though speculation has surrounded him for years, and he remains a frequent name among Democrats expected to enter the 2028 race.

Shapiro said he spoke with his family after the April arson attack on his home about whether serving in elected office is worth the growing risk of political violence, which many Americans now see as rising, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

“If I leave because violence pushed us out or scared us, then those who want to perpetuate political violence win,” he said. “I’ve got to stay. I’ve got to show that we’re not afraid.”
