Friday, Feb. 9 marked a significant moment for the Academy of the New Church boys’ basketball team, writes Owen McCure for City of Basketball Love in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

For the first time since 2009, the Bryn Athyn school won the Friends Schools League championship. For four seasons in a row, the team would make it to the league championship only to walk away without the title.

This year, however, was their year. The team dominated Friends’ Central School on the court, 64-50.

Coach Kevin Givens said that the previous losses have made him and his team hungry for the win.

The Academy of the New Church team had some early-season losses to McDonogh School in Maryland and Peddie School in New Jersey, but rebounded strongly, Given said.

“Every time we lost a game we would bounce back. If we lost another game two or three games later, we would bounce back. I saw some resiliency there. I saw in these guys that they really wanted it.”
