Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn is hoping that this year, the boys’ basketball team can go all the way and win the Friends Schools League championship, writes Joseph Santoliquito for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The last time the school won the championship was in 2005, but the boys have managed to reach the final for the last four seasons.

This season, things are once again looking good for the team. The Lions finished 18-6 overall and 8-1 in the league. Some consider them the favorite to win the championship.

“The kids are mindful of that, and they are going into this season with a purpose — that’s good,” said longtime ANC coach Kevin Givens.

“We have to break through and win one of these years. These guys expect to win the league and they are exactly on point. They feel that this is our year.”

Givens’ goal for this season is in line with their thinking.

“My expectations are the same as always,” he said. “We want to win the league championship.”
