In the run-up to Super Bowl LVII, the Philadelphia v. Kansas City rivalry goes way beyond what happens on the gridiron. Best foods, best fans, best mascots are all up for side-by-side comparison. Jim Young, of AmateurGolf.com, did an East Coast/Great Plains rivalry look at golf.
Young started with the superstars that hail from each locale: Bryn Mawr native Jay Sigel was cited for amassing one of the greatest amateur records of all time. Kansas City, on the other hand, did produce Tom Watson, an eight-time major champion.
Turning attention to courses, Young noted our region’s reputation for some of the most historic links in the nation. But Kansas City got a nod for its layouts, heralded nationwide for their quality.
Drilling down to the county level, however, Montgomery County’s golf strengths show a regional edge.
Of the top-ten noted courses, five of them are in-county:
- Merion Golf Club (East Course), Ardmore
- Philadelphia Country Club, Gladwyne
- Huntingdon Valley Country Club
- Manufacturer’s Golf & Country Club, Fort Washington
- Gulph Mills Country Club, King of Prussia
Here’s hoping that when the Eagles players return Monday, those who golf (Jason Kelce et.al.) can navigate 18 holes — in the county or elsewhere — wearing chunky Super Bowl rings.
The complete list of rival golf courses here and in Kansas City is at AmateurGolf.com.

Pro football players on the golf course can produce unexpected results, as Tom Brady learned in this 2020 report from Entertainment Tonight Canada.
