Michael McDermott didn’t officially compete at this year’s Masters Tournament — but he still walked the legendary fairways at Augusta National in a way few ever will.
The Havertown native and Bryn Mawr resident served as a “marker” during the iconic event, a role reserved for highly skilled amateurs when an odd number of golfers are in the field. This marks the second time in three years McDermott has been tapped for the honor.
A standout in the local golf scene, McDermott played alongside pros Tom Kim and Brian Campbell during the weekend rounds, drawing praise for his skills and laid-back presence.
“He played great actually,” said Kim. “He was a complete baller.”
McDermott’s golf roots run deep in the region. A St. Joe’s Hall of Famer, he helped the Hawks go undefeated all four years during his time there and earned three All-Atlantic 10 Conference honors — more than any player in school history. His father, Neil McDermott, was once president of the Golf Association of Philadelphia.
Now living in Bryn Mawr with his wife and three sons, McDermott continues to quietly represent Montgomery County’s long-standing golf tradition — even when the spotlight is on Augusta.
