A new era is beginning for Saint Joseph’s University field hockey following one of the most successful stretches in program history, writes Mia Messina for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Sam Brown has been named the Hawks’ next head coach, stepping into his first collegiate head coaching role after serving as associate head coach at Syracuse.
Brown brings international experience to Lower Merion, having coached in New Zealand and England. Once in the United States, he built his résumé with stops at James Madison and Syracuse. He reached the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals twice while with the Syracuse program.
He takes over the Bala Cynwyd team that has made five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a standout 2024 season that ended with a national championship game appearance. That run came under former head coach Hannah Prince, who departed earlier this year for Penn State.
Brown also has ties to the Hawks’ program through Syracuse head coach Lynn Farquhar, a former St. Joe’s leader.
Now, he inherits a nationally competitive roster and a program with high expectations, as St. Joe’s looks to continue its recent success on the national stage.
