Saint Joseph’s University in Bala Cynwyd is ushering in a new chapter for its athletics program with the hiring of Ash Puri as vice president and director of athletics, writes Jeff Neiburg for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The move brings a seasoned Big 5 leader to Montco as the university looks to build on its competitive and academic foundation.
Puri most recently served as athletic director at La Salle University. He also held a senior leadership role at Villanova University, giving him experience across three of Philadelphia’s most prominent college athletics programs in just four years.
At La Salle, Puri oversaw several key upgrades, including the transformation of Tom Gola Arena into the John E. Glaser Arena. He also expanded the school’s athletic offerings with new women’s sports and the revival of its baseball program.
His resume also includes stops with professional organizations like the Oakland Athletics, and he has experience in both the NBA and NFL.
The Bala Cynwyd university’s leadership cited Puri’s track record of building programs, enhancing the student-athlete experience, and driving growth as key factors in the hire. He replaces former AD Jill Bodensteiner, who departed earlier this year.
Puri is expected to be formally introduced at a May 18 news conference at Hagan Arena, where he’ll outline his vision for the future of St. Joe’s athletics.
