Vonnie Gros, the Ursinus College alum who coached the United States women’s field hockey team to an Olympic bronze medal, has died aged 90, writes USA Field Hockey.
A true pioneer, Gros helped lay the foundation for women’s field hockey nationwide. Even with limited resources and little expectation of international success, she introduced possession-focused play, strategic discipline, and mental sharpness long before they were standard in the United States. Former players said she was far ahead of her time, guiding the sport toward its future.
“Vonnie’s greatest gift wasn’t just building winning teams – it was building a true sense of ‘team’ that lasted a lifetime,” said Gina Buggy, a member of the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Team
After winning bronze in 1984, Gros stepped away from coaching to focus on the sport’s future. She aimed to get more young girls playing hockey, forming the idea that became the Futures, now known as Nexus, program in USA Field Hockey’s Olympic Development Pathway.
“Vonnie Gros will truly be missed, but her legacy and impact on USA Field Hockey will live on forever,” said Char Morett Curtis, a Los Angeles 1984 Olympian.
