One St. Joe’s lacrosse player’s journey from overlooked freshman to team captain is helping to define the Hawks’ season, writes Ryan Mack for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Midfielder Griffin Mallory has emerged as both a top contributor and vocal leader, stepping into a key role for the program.
Mallory arrived at the Bala Cynwyd school in 2022, buried on the depth chart, using his redshirt year to study veteran teammates and refine his approach. His patience has paid off. Now a graduate student, he leads the team in assists and ranks among its top scorers while starting every game this season.
His growth mirrors the culture St. Joe’s has built in recent years. The Hawks made a run to an Atlantic 10 championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024. Mallory carries those lessons with him, especially during a transitional year that included a coaching change.
New head coach Scott Meehan has leaned on Mallory’s experience, praising his work ethic and ability to guide younger players. That leadership has been critical as the Hawks push through a competitive season and aim to finish strong.
Mallory’s journey from scout team to captain now serves as a blueprint for the next generation of Hawks.
