The release of Nike’s new sneaker, highlighting Kobe Bryant’s Lower Merion roots, is drawing collectors eager to celebrate one of Montco’s most iconic athletes, writes Maggie Prosser for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Nike’s latest collection, which includes Air Force 1 and Dunk Low Protro models, pays tribute to Bryant’s time at Lower Merion High School. Bryant led the Aces to a state championship in 1996.
The broader release coincides with the 30th anniversary of that title run, a defining moment in Bryant’s early career.
Select pairs dropped early at Philadelphia retailer Lapstone & Hammer, where sneaker enthusiasts lined up before sunrise for a chance to secure the limited-edition designs.
The shoes feature a range of details tied to Bryant’s high school era, including maroon-and-white colorways, a No. 33 emblem, and design elements referencing his “Mamba Mentality.”
For many in the region, the release goes beyond footwear. Austin Rosen, a teacher at Welsh Valley Middle School in Lower Merion, said the connection to Bryant’s local legacy makes the collection especially meaningful.
The launch also highlights Bryant’s enduring influence in the Philadelphia area, where his story began long before his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers.
