The Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard, a 52-year-old food pantry in Ambler, is modernizing with a grocery-store-style experience for the neighborhood, reports Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
“They’re wonderful people here,” said Valerie Goode, of Ambler. “They’re so kind and considerate, and they show respect.”
Since its founding in 1973, the food bank has served the community in many ways. Its latest update, which was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, transformed it into a “full-choice” pantry. Here guests can browse shelves and choose their own items rather than receiving pre-bagged goods from a list.
“We were a once-a-month pantry, where our clients would be able to come once a month and receive food for their family,” said Cindy Wedholm, Executive Director of the Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard. “We then switched to every other week, our clients were able to select items they wanted our volunteers to pack. Since then, we have adjusted our plans in order to get to the page that we’re at right now.
But to make the renovation possible, the food pantry had to relocate its clothing boutique to a new space next door.
