A touch-screen kiosk in Bala Cynwyd is one of the newly implemented technologies offering more options to clients of the food pantries of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, according to a staff report for Jewish Exponent.

Before the touch-screen kiosks, people visiting one of the nearby Jewish Federation food pantries would be given a pre-selected bag of food. They were implemented four years ago to make clients feel better by offering them choices, promoting healthy eating, and maximizing donor dollars by reducing food waste.

The kiosks were placed in two locations, one at its Main Line location in Bala Cynwyd. There, clients log into their accounts where they review the available food onscreen. Once they make a decision, they “buy” the selected food using their virtual dollars and go home with their groceries.

Other innovations include Mitzvah Food Project’s online ordering. This allows clients of food pantries, especially those who have trouble leaving their homes, to order food online.

“We wanted to allow even more people easy access to the food pantry,” said Brian Gralnick, Jewish Federation’s director of social responsibility.
