The Lower Merion Township Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the installation of red light cameras during its meeting on Wednesday night, according to a staff report from 6abc.
“It’s a safety driven program to reduce the number of crashes,” said Sgt. Matthew Colflesh of the Lower Merion Township Police Department.
If the additional cameras are approved by PennDOT, the first set will be installed on Lancaster Avenue at Remington Road in Wynewood, a location identified as high-risk after a one-day test revealed that more than 650 drivers ran the red light.
“Since that intersection has the highest number of crashes in the township, we decided to go with that intersection first,” said Colflesh.
Also being considered for red light camera installations are Lancaster Avenue at Haverford Station Road and Montgomery Avenue at Airdale Road, both of which ranked just behind Lancaster Avenue at Remington Road in the number of violations recorded during the recent test, with 339 and 249 violations, respectively.
“What does that tell me is that we need a little bit more adherence to the traffic laws,” said Colflesh.
Drivers who commit red light violations will face fines of up to $100.
