Pennsylvania License Plates Get Patriotic Refresh with Liberty Bell Redesign

Standard blue and yellow PA license plates are set for a refresh as the state starts rolling out a new design featuring the Liberty Bell.

Standard blue and yellow Pennsylvania license plates are set for a patriotic refresh as the state begins rolling out a new design featuring the Liberty Bell and a red, white, and blue palette, writes Davis Cuffe for Billy Penn at WHYY.

The new plates, that were unveiled almost a year ago by Gov. Josh Shapiro, display the red-lettered message “Let Freedom Ring” across the bottom.

Shapiro posted an update to his announcement on social media on June 17, National Mascot Day, appropriately accompanied by several mascots from the state’s professional sports teams.

The video promoting the new plates, captioned “No matter who you root for, we think you’ll like the news we’re dropping,” featured Gritty, Franklin, Lincoln, the Phanatic, Swoop, and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Steely McBeam.

As of Tuesday, more than 12,000 new plates have already been delivered across the state.

Those who would like to switch their plates can visit pa.gov/licenseplate. The switch typically costs $13, though the total may vary based on fees and possible personalizations. The new plates are part of Shapiro’s tourism push and are completely optional.
