Joey O’Brien, a defensive back and wide receiver from Wyndmoor’s La Salle College High School, is the state’s No. 1 high school football player entering the 2025 season, writes Joseph Santoliquito for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The 6-foot-5, 190-pound player is the top recruiting target of Penn State, Oregon, Notre Dame, Clemson, and Tennessee, while Ole Miss and Miami are also very interested.
Sport is part of his genetic makeup. His father, Joe, played football and baseball at Roman Catholic. Tishara, his mother, was a high school star in three sports. She went on to play volleyball and basketball at Cumberland University. His sister Taylor is Plymouth Whitemarsh’s all-time leading scorer in basketball.
During his junior season with the Explorers, O’Brien caught 68 passes, setting a single-season school record. He totaled 1,029 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 36 tackles, broke up 13 passes, and made one interception.
He was also the Most Valuable Player in the Philadelphia Catholic League Red Division.
“I have not seen a kid in my time here in this area like Joey,” said La Salle coach Brett Gordon.
