Football had always been a family thing for Drew Gordon, retired champion football coach at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, who passed away at the age of 73 at his home in Ambler.

His father before him played and so did his son afterwards, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Football and coaching were in their blood.

Gordon was the star quarterback at Bishop McDevitt in the 1960s and at Villanova University in the 1970s. And when he switched to coaching football, he attacked the job with as much passion as he did playing on the field.

As head coach at LaSalle College High School, he led his team to a state championship in 2009. They were the first Catholic League team to win a state championship.

During his time as coach, he led his teams to five more league titles and four District 12 championships.

Colleagues said Gordon applied “commitment and meticulous preparation” to everything he did.

That included the development of his players. He always made sure they were putting as much time on their academics as they were their football skills.
