Broadway ‘Wicked’ Star from Downingtown Performs National Anthem Ahead of Eagles’ NFC Win

Downingtown's Mary Kate Morrissey, who plays Elphaba in Broadway’s Wicked, sang the national anthem ahead of the Eagles’ NFC Championship.

Mary Kate “MK” Morrissey, a Downingtown native who plays the green witch Elphaba in the current Broadway production of Wicked, sang the national anthem at Lincoln Financial Field ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles’ NFC Championship, writes Emily Bloch for The Philadelphia Inquirer

For Morrissey, who attended Bishop Shanahan High School and was in the Philadelphia All Catholic Chorus while growing up in a big Irish Catholic family in Chester County, this was a full circle moment.

“My two grandparents are off the boat from Ireland and landed in Philly,” said Morrissey.

Morrissey is also a huge fan of the Birds, and she willingly skipped two scheduled Wicked performances over the weekend to attend the game instead – a major sacrifice as her yearlong contract with the production ends on March 2.

However her decision was not that surprising, as she grew up in a household that was filled with Eagles memorabilia.

“The game was always on,” she said. “I think I was born knowing the Eagles’ fight song. I can’t even remember learning it. That’s how long ago I learned it.”
