Center City Blood Bank Gives Dogs the Chance to Become Donors and Save Lives

Dog's physical exam includes taking blood sample.

Dogs can now play their part in saving the lives of other pets, writes Shaynah Ferreira for FOX 29.

A Center City blood bank is giving dogs the chance to become blood donors and help save other pets.

To date, seven dogs have donated blood to save four lives since the Veterinary Emergency Group opened its doggy blood bank in November 2023.

To donate, dogs must meet certain requirements and undergo several screenings.

According to Stephanie Reeves, the team’s hospital manager, the dogs are ideally between 1-7 years old and weigh over 55 pounds.

The exam process takes roughly 10 minutes from start to finish.

After donating, the dogs are given treats and a new toy before getting sent on their way.

“We do ask that any pet parent that wants their hero pet in this program can commit to six donations per year,” said Jessica Houlihan, a veterinary nurse.

The group noted that these donations are important because despite there being a shortage of blood, there’s not a shortage of pets that are in need.

The Veterinary Emergency Group is holding a screening event on Saturday, January 27.
