Caitlyn Degner, a dairy farmer who works at Walmoore Holsteins dairy farm in West Grove, decided to join the Adopt a Cow program as soon as she heard about it, writes Kaylee Fuller for ABC27. 

The program helps bring dairy farming to life in the classroom by allowing students and teachers to adopt a dairy cow as a classroom pet. 

“At the time I was in charge of the young stock on the farm and not only wanted to share the joy of calves, but also wanted to help educate people who aren’t familiar with the dairy industry,” said Degner. 

As part of the program, she collects and then distributes information about the calves to participating classrooms. 

“As a host farm, we select 4 calves that are born within a specified week and periodically collect information regarding each calf, in addition to pictures to send to the class,” explained Degner. 

Throughout the school year, classrooms will receive photo and video updates of their cow. There are also hands-on learning activities along with a free curriculum that students can participate in as they learn about the dairy industry.
