A Todd Romero–authored Philadelphia Business Journal analysis of area incomes reveals four Montgomery County communities whose 2020 residents’ earnings vaulted them to a list of the wealthiest ZIP Codes. The distinction is especially notable for its timing, during the economic turmoil associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents of Greater Philadelphia’s 10 richest neighborhoods saw their incomes jump 7.4 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Across the Southeastern Pa. Southern N.J. region, the numbers show the top 10 ZIP Codes having an average median household income of $190,967 in the first year of the pandemic. That figure was up from $177,767 the year prior.

The number of collar county residents making at least $200,000 was also up: 46 percent of the population reached that mark in 2020; only 36 percent did so in 2019.

There was some shuffling in the geographies at the top of this year’s list. Gladwyne’s 19035 ZIP Code hopped up two levels to tie with Villanova’s 19085 as the wealthiest in the region.

Meanwhile, the 19066 ZIP code of Merion Station fell one place to No. 3.

One Montco ZIP Code, 19426 in Collegeville, slid from the regional top 25.
