Homeowners seeking the benefits of fitness in the convenience of home are finding it by constructing their own in-home gyms. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Terri Akman reported a Montgomery County pair tapping into the trend.

West Mount Airy couple Garrett and Jennifer Miller wanted a commercial-grade workout space under their own roof.

To get it, they worked first with their custom-home designer, Cunningham Architecture of King of Prussia.

The architects there purposely outfitted the basement with 10-foot ceilings to accommodate large-scale gear. Further, it ensured that the layout could accept plumbing fixtures for a spa.

The Millers then hired Fitness Exchange, Conshohocken, to equip it.

The $30,000 in-home gym is now fully stocked with club-grade versions of a:

  • Treadmill
  • Bike
  • Pilates reformer
  • Arc trainer
  • Rowing machine
  • Weight bench
  • Spa/sauna
  • Sound system

“If you wake up early or get home late, you can get in a nice workout,” said Garrett.

“Everything from the ceiling fans and the way the air flows to the HVAC system, flooring and colors are about making it inviting and comforting so you are going to want to use it.”

More on the Miller’s in-home gym setup — and recommendations for those interested in duplicating it — is at The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Space is a consideration for in-home workouts; however, this fitness aficionado built a legit gym in a shed.
