Accomplished Commencement Speakers Line Up at Montgomery County Universities This Month

Montgomery County colleges will host a variety of commencement speakers this May, writes Susan Snyder for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Here’s who you can expect to see at colleges and universities here in Montgomery County.

Cultural historian and cookbook author Jessica B. Harris is a 1968 graduate of Bryn Mawr College and will speak on May 14.

Rosemont College will be hosting David Gould, chief diversity and impact officer at Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment.

Muralist Katie Merz and Vai Sikahema, a former Philadelphia Eagle and longtime Philadelphia broadcaster for NBC 10 Philadelphia will be speaking at Ursinus College.

Merz recently completed a 12-story, 120-foot smokestack tower mural on Ursinus’ campus titled Live the Questions, illustrating the impact of racial injustice as well as the pandemic.

Gwynedd Mercy University will host Philanthropist Leigh Middleton as speaker at commencement.

Poet, activist, and scholar Sonia Sanchez will speak at Arcadia University on May 20.

At St. Joseph’s University on May 21, Brother Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vatican Observatory and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, and C. Kevin Carroll, an author, a 1997 graduate, and founder of Katalyst will speak to the graduates of 2020.

On May at University of the Sciences Ala Stanford will speak. Dr. Stanford is a Montgomery County physician who founded the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium during the pandemic and who was recently appointed by President Biden as a regional director for the Department of Health and Human Services.
