Horsham-based Bimbo Bakeries USA Continues to See Increased Demand as Pandemic Lingers
As the coronavirus pandemic grinds on, Horsham-based Bimbo Bakeries USA continues to see increased demand for its products, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In the middle of March, sales of sliced bread increased by 60 percent, according to Fred Penny, President of the nation’s largest commercial baker.
That left some stores stripped of bread products, which in turn caused buyers to start hoarding other baked items off store shelves.
Bimbo drivers reported that some stores had bread lines, and “consumers were following some of our trucks so they could get into the stores and buy bread,” said Penny. “Early on, it was chaos.”
So to meet the growing demand, Bimbo reopened a shuttered bakery in Hazleton and added more people to its other plants.
The surge in sales of packaged bread, buns, and rolls came after the steady decline of one or two percent a year nationwide prior to the pandemics arrival.
Among the Bimbo brands that continue to thrive are Entenmann’s sweet baked goods and Arnold premium and organic breads. Fresh products, such as Lender’s Bagels and Sara Lee dinner rolls which are also flying off the shelves.
