California-based Grocery Outlet is expanding its footprint on the East Coast with a significant number of new stores, with several of them in Montgomery County, writes Jon Springer for the Winsight Grocery Business.

The discounter has recently posted job listings for independent store operations managers for a number of new stores in the Philadelphia region, including in Elkins Park and Royersford. Previously, the grocer had posted a listing for a store manager in King of Prussia.

“We are looking for strong retail professionals that are interested in partnering with Grocery Outlet to run new stores throughout Pennsylvania,” read the store operations manager posts published on October 21.

Grocery Outlet is also looking to fill several corporate positions in Pennsylvania.

Grocery Outlet functions using a unique model where stores with its name are usually owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs who are responsible for the store’s hiring, operations, and purchasing goods from the company to sell on consignment.

Thanks to overruns, packaging changes, and other non-traditional supply practices, Grocery Outlet is able to offer deeply discounted and rotating products. That model is often compared to the one utilized by the discount clothing retailer TJ Maxx.
