The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks is currently home to a pop-up drive-in theater, one of many opening around the country that are breathing new life into this decades old American tradition, writes Kim Strong for the Go Erie.

Thanks to the pop-up’s arrival, kids have been able to discover the fun of outdoor cinema first-hand in recent weeks. It is also giving their parents the chance to relive a part of their childhood.

“It’s very Americana,” said Mark Manuel, CEO of Kilburn Live, a Los Angeles-based company that partnered with the Oaks center to open the theater. “It has a lot of nostalgic feel to it.”

The theater opened with a screening of “Beetlejuice” on July 23. Since then, it has been showing other classic movies such as “Ghostbusters” and “Gremlins,” with the “Harry Potter” films also on the itinerary.

Manuel has so far opened dozens of pop-up venues since the pandemic started and is planning to open eight more this month.
