The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville and Water Tower Cinema in Montgomeryville are gearing up for the July 4 weekend reopening with a plethora of added safety measures, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Colonial has added ample space between seats and increased the frequency of sanitization of amenities. The theater has also made masks a requirement for both staff and moviegoers unless the later are eating popcorn in their seats and are at least six feet from other groups.

According to marketing director Bob Trate, the Colonial’s reopening success hinges on people respecting the new rules.

“You just want to go and turn your brain off and watch a movie,” he said, “and not worry about somebody coughing behind you.”

Meanwhile, Water Tower is offering $1 masks for customers who forget theirs and many other safety measures. These include 45-minute theater cleanings between showings and directional arrows to reduce crowds.

Both theaters are relying on second-run movies to draw in moviegoers as Hollywood is continues to delay new releases until the big theater chains reopen.
