Several of Montgomery County’s busiest stations will benefit from a test initiative as SEPTA partners with Uber this summer to alleviate parking issues at peak hours, writes Jason Laughlin for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Among the 11 Regional Rail stations selected for the pilot program are Glenside, Jenkintown-Wyncote, Elkins Park, Melrose Park, and Lansdale. Riders using Uber to reach or depart these stations will get 40 percent discount on their Uber ride, up to a maximum discount of $10 per trip.

The discount program will start on Memorial Day and end on Labor Day and may turn into a permanent arrangement if successful. This period will give SEPTA a good picture on how ride sharing could affect its passengers.

“We will be studying it this summer,” said Erik Johanson, SEPTA Director of Business Innovation. “People are already doing this so we know there’s a market for it.”

SEPTA’s 11 Regional Rail stations dealt with 2.8 million passengers in 2015 and have significantly fewer parking spaces than similar networks in Boston and Chicago. As a result, parking is often full by 7:30 AM.

The goal of the program is to determine if lack of parking is reducing passenger numbers and if an incentive to travel to the station by Uber will make people more inclined to use the train.
