She Left a Pharmaceutical Career to Fix Textured Hair. Now Naturaz Is Going National.

Collegeville entrepreneur Mumbi Dunjwa left pharma to launch Naturaz, a vegan hair care brand now in 60-plus retailers nationwide.

For many entrepreneurs, the best business ideas don’t come from market research or MBA programs. They come from lived experience.

For Collegeville entrepreneur Mumbi Dunjwa, the frustration was personal and it followed her everywhere, according to Holly Quinn with Technical.ly.

After years working in chemistry, nuclear medicine, and health technology, she kept running into the same problem: the products available for textured hair simply didn’t work well enough.

Rather than keep searching for a solution someone else had made, she decided to build one herself.

A Brand Born From Frustration

The result was Naturaz, a vegan hair care brand designed specifically for curly and coily hair. What started as a science-driven side project has grown into a national brand now available in more than 60 retail locations across the United States.

Naturaz stands out in a crowded beauty market by marrying scientific rigor with a growing consumer demand for cleaner products. The company’s formulas focus on moisture retention and hair health while avoiding dozens of ingredients it considers undesirable.

The hair products give customers a credible alternative to products loaded with harsh chemicals or animal-derived ingredients.

Jumping Off the Cliff

The road to get there wasn’t easy. Dunjwa bootstrapped the company in its early years, funding research and development out of her own pocket. Eventually, she made the kind of leap that separates dreamers from founders.

“I left the pharmaceutical industry, and it really feels like I just sort of jumped off the cliff,” she said.

The Bet Paid Off

It turns out the cliff had a soft landing. Naturaz has raised more than $1 million in investment capital. Dunjwa secured backing from organizations including Ben Franklin Technology Partners, the Bucks County Industrial Development Authority, the Philadelphia Community Impact Fund, and the JVS Philadelphia Fund for Women.

On Shelves and Growing

Today, Naturaz products line the shelves at retailers including TJ Maxx, while Dunjwa continues pushing the science forward from lab space at the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center in Doylestown. Her story is a reminder that some of the most compelling businesses are built not by chasing trends, but by solving a problem you know better than anyone else.
