For one Bryn Mawr nurse, the hospital where she works today is also where her life began, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC Philadelphia.
Allyson Smyth now serves in the NICU at Bryn Mawr Hospital, the same unit where she was treated as a newborn.
Smyth’s story has come full circle in more ways than one. One of the nurses who cared for her decades ago, Karen Lenker, is now her colleague and mentor. Lenker recognized Smyth after seeing a photo of her parents, reconnecting the two in a remarkable twist of fate.
Now working in the NICU, Smyth brings a deeply personal perspective to her role, shaped by her own early experience as a patient. Her journey also carries emotional weight, as her twin brother, William, passed away just one day after they were born.
Recently, Smyth received additional support through an anonymous $1 million donation to the hospital aimed at easing student debt for healthcare workers.
As she continues her career and looks ahead to future milestones, Smyth’s story stands as a powerful example of connection, resilience, and community in Montgomery County healthcare.
