A St. Joseph’s University alumnus and Phillies fan from childhood, Luke Gabrysh has been gaining attention for his performance in the organization’s minor league ranks, writes Alex Coffey for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Gabrysh, a Wilmington native, enrolled at the Bala Cynwyd school in 2022 to play baseball and took advantage of its closeness to Citizens Bank Park, attending as many games as he could. On July 23, 2024, he returned to the stadium in a new role, greeted by Phillies scout Jeff Zona and other team executives.
“That was when it hit,” said Gabrysh. “I went there not to watch a baseball game. I went there to be part of the organization.”
Selected by the Phillies in the 15th round of the MLB draft, Gabrysh posted modest numbers in his first minor league season, recording a 3.33 ERA across Low-A and High-A. Since then, he has shown improvement, with his 6-foot-3 right-handed fastball averaging 94 mph last year, rising to 96 mph this spring, and occasionally hitting 98 mph.
“He can really spin the ball,” said director of pitching development, Travis Hergert. “He can really spin the ball. And he can hold his [velocity] over the course of multiple innings, as well.”
