Lansdale native Sean McDermott’s nine-year run as head coach of the Buffalo Bills came to an abrupt end this week, writes John Wawrow for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
His tenure reshaped one of the NFL’s long-struggling franchises but stopped just short of a Super Bowl breakthrough.
McDermott was fired Monday following Buffalo’s overtime loss at Denver in the divisional round of the playoffs. Team owner Terry Pegula cited a need for a new leadership structure despite acknowledging McDermott’s role in turning the Bills into a perennial contender.
McDermott grew up in Lansdale and starred at La Salle College High School. Under his watch, the Bills ended a 17-year postseason drought, reached two AFC Championship Games and became one of the league’s most consistent winners — even if the Super Bowl remained elusive.
Quarterback Josh Allen developed into an MVP under McDermott, but repeated close playoff losses and rising urgency around Allen’s prime years ultimately raised expectations in Buffalo. The Bills went 12–5 this season, finishing second in the AFC East.
From North Penn youth sports to the NFL sidelines, McDermott’s firing may mark the end of an era in Buffalo, but not the end of the road for a Montgomery County coach widely respected across the league.
