Lansdale native and Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has been inducted into the athletics hall of fame of his alma mater, The College of William and Mary. Ethan Qin covered the honor in The Flat Hat, the Williamsburg, Virgina, college’s student newspaper.

McDemott was part of the William and Mary class of 1998; he played defensive back for the school’s football team after graduating from La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor.

He wasn’t an easy pick to play for the Tribes.

The school’s offensive coordinator at the time observed, “He was about my height [but] he weighed less than me.” McDermott was therefore characterized as a “tough sell” and made the cut only as a preferred walk-on.

His talent, however, eventually yielded a scholarship and a starting position.

After obtaining a finance degree, McDermott was retained at William and Mary as a graduate-assistant to the coaching staff.

The leadership skills honed in that role led to his scouting administrative coordinator slot with the Philadelphia Eagles.

From there, he went to the Carolina Panthers and eventually to the Bills.

His takeaway comments on the hall of fame honor became an “…overall [message] to my kids: If you set your mind to something, you’ll achieve it.”

The full story of Sean McDermott’s career accolade is at The Flat Hat.
