The Norristown Hospitality Center, a crucial support hub for low-income and homeless Montgomery County residents, is facing the risk of being shut down, writes Nate File for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The nonprofit day shelter that provides free meals, showers, laundry, legal aid, and other services has been instructed to move out of its current home by the end of the month.
Last year, the day shelter served 1,400 people, with one third of them experiencing homelessness. No other nearby organization offers the same range of services.
“The community would be losing a very vital resource,” said executive director Sunanda Charles.
Founded in 1992, the Hospitality Center left its longtime home at the end of June 2025. It secured a six-month lease at the Senior Adult Activities Center of Montgomery County and received a one-month extension after that expired on December 31. However it must now find a new temporary or permanent location.
News of the search for a new home has quickly spread, and Charles has already received calls and emails from many former users of the center’s services, offering support and gratitude and expressing sadness at the potential closure.
