Norristown is getting a fresh look, thanks to a beautification effort that’s transforming everyday infrastructure into art and more welcoming streetscapes, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
At the corner of DeKalb and Airy streets, Philadelphia artist Neasie Blaze recently turned a traffic signal box into a striking portrait. This is part of a larger project aimed at highlighting Norristown’s identity and business corridors.
Blaze said the community response has been “insane,” noting the encouragement of residents who stop to admire her work. She plans to complete several more boxes across town in the coming months. Each project is designed to catch the eye and celebrate the borough’s spirit.
The project is part of the municipality’s broader $1.4 million Beautify Norristown initiative. Alongside public art, the funds are supporting upgraded signage, wrapped utility boxes, tree trimming, and improved streetscapes along Main Street.
Contract partners include Signarama Montco to replace and refresh signage, Corbo Landscaping for tree maintenance, and R Smith Paving for patterned, stamped intersections in terracotta tones. Officials aim to complete much of the work by year’s end or early 2026.
“This will actually clean up Main Street,” said Public Works Director Thomas Odeningbo.
