Kobe Bryant’s Competitive Drive Forged Chester-Lower Merion Rivalry

Kobe Bryant’s competitive drive helped transform matchups between the Chester Clippers and the Lower Merion Aces into a true rivalry.

Kobe Bryant’s competitive drive helped transform matchups between the Chester Clippers and the Lower Merion Aces into a basketball rivalry that lasted for decades, writes Alex Coffey for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

When Bryant arrived in 1992, Lower Merion was not considered a basketball school, particularly when measured against local powerhouses such as Chester and Coatesville. Even during his freshman year, Bryant began to change that perception by setting a new standard during a 4-20 season, working out before class, and displaying a level of toughness that was unfamiliar to his teammates.

Over the following years, Lower Merion rose into the ranks of the Philadelphia area’s top high school teams, fueled by growing confidence, on-court swagger, and vocal celebrations after big shots. Chester became its primary rival, particularly in the PIAA playoffs, giving rise to a decades-long basketball rivalry.

The two teams played some of the region’s greatest high school basketball games from 1996 through the mid-2010s. While the rivalry has cooled somewhat, it still lives on.

“The pride and the intensity and the history will never fade,” said Lower Merion coach Gregg Downer. “I mean, if we played them tomorrow night, that would be an intense game.”
