Audbon’s PJM Interconnection Caught in the Middle of National Energy Debate

Audubon-based PJM is at the center of a national debate over how massive new data centers connect to the power grid.

A growing national debate over how to power massive new data centers is placing PJM Interconnection at the center of a high-stakes regulatory fight, writes Ethan Howland for Utility Dive.

The Audubon-based grid operator is navigating competing industry pressures before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission over how large power users should connect to the electric grid.

At issue is whether PJM should have the authority to delay or deny large data center projects if they threaten grid reliability. Trade groups representing data centers and power providers have asked FERC to dismiss a complaint that would give PJM broader control over those decisions. They warn that it could slow economic development and create uncertainty across the energy sector.

At the same time, PJM is opposing a separate effort that would accelerate rules allowing large facilities to colocate directly at power plants. PJM leaders argue that rushing those decisions could interfere with broader national standards now being developed at the request of the U.S. Department of Energy.

The debate highlights the enormous strain energy-hungry data centers are placing on the nation’s power grid, and the challenge of balancing growth, affordability, and long-term reliability.
