Several Republican governors have joined their Democrat counterparts, including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, calling for an overhaul of Audubon-based PJM Interconnection, writes Mike Dougherty for KYW Newsradio.
Governors from twelve states wrote a letter last week urging PJM regulators to implement fundamental changes and appoint a new leadership following the resignation of two board members and the CEO. They hope this would help in restoring confidence.
“With billions of ratepayer dollars and the stability of our grid at stake, it is critical that PJM take concerted, effective action to restore state and stakeholder confidence,” the letter states.
PJM manages the power grid in over a dozen states in the eastern and midwestern United States. Shapiro and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said that the company must give states a greater voice in how to meet growing energy demands.
According to New Jersey assemblywoman Heather Simmons, PJM has failed to uphold its commitments, including being slow to approve solar energy projects.
“They haven’t been responsive to the needs of the ratepayers, particularly in New Jersey,” she said. “We’re watching families and businesses really struggle with costs that are soaring out of control.”
