Abington Boys’ Soccer Ends 41-Year Wait With Historic State Championship

Abington High School wins its first boys’ soccer state championship since 1981, capping a historic season and honoring a beloved coach.

Abington Senior High School is celebrating a long-awaited moment in sports history, writes Tyler Delpercio for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

After 41 years, the boys’ soccer team captured the PIAA Class 4A state championship, defeating West Chester Henderson 3-1 and earning the program’s first state crown. The win capped a dominant 22-2-3 season and erased the sting of an earlier district-final loss to Haverford.

Senior captain Sean Westmoreland said the magnitude of the victory was still sinking in, adding that the team felt fueled by the support of the entire Abington community. Longtime coach Randy Garber called the title the perfect ending to his coaching career, which he plans to conclude following the championship run.

Students traveled to York County to cheer on the Ghosts, while classrooms across Abington followed the game live. The team’s return sparked an emotional homecoming parade through Glenside and past local elementary schools. Residents lined the streets to celebrate the long-awaited triumph.

As the banners rise and Garber prepares to step down, school leaders say his impact extends far beyond wins and losses. Athletic director Charles Grasty praised Garber’s mentorship both on the field and in the classroom, calling his legacy “one of a kind.”
