High school basketball season has started, returning with a host of top players in the region to watch, including two standouts in Montgomery County, writes Joseph Santoliquito for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Ryan Carter, a 6-foot junior guard at Friends’ Central, displayed remarkable courage during the PIAA Class 5A state championship games before an injury forced her out. She tallied 23 points in Archbishop Wood’s 45-37 loss to South Fayette. Having changed schools three years in a row, starting as a freshman at Penn Charter, she now ranks near the top of all major college programs nationwide. She possesses an excellent shot and can score from any area on the court. This season, she will handle the point guard duties for Vinny Simpson’s Friends’ Central squad.
Zya Small is a 6-2 athletic junior forward at Friends’ Central who can do almost everything on the court. Her main strengths are defense and creating turnovers. She spent her freshman year at Scranton High before transferring to Friends’ Central as a sophomore. Regarded as one of the top players in the state, she can play multiple positions, block shots, grab rebounds, and alter opponents’ shots.
