The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr recently acquired the College Hall apartment complex at 801 Montgomery Avenue, reports Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
They purchased the 24-unit building for $12 million. It’s has long been a popular off-campus housing spot for Villanova students, and sits steps from the Bryn Mawr SEPTA station and downtown shops. The purchase from Fort Washington’s Altman Management gives Shipley nearly full control of a 17-acre stretch in the area.
New Head of School Ian Craig said the acquisition launches a campus planning initiative to assess Shipley’s current footprint, identify future needs, and decide how to integrate new property.
“This acquisition opens the door to an exciting range of possibilities to advance and support Shipley’s mission now and in the future,” Craig said.
The site has been a Villanova student hotspot and an occasional source of neighborhood complaints. As many as 100 students have lived there in recent years.
The Shipley School serves about 740 students from preschool through high school. The school has invested heavily in campus upgrades in recent years, raising $47 million through a two-phase campaign.
