Malvern’s Saquon Barkley has turned down President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, writes Olivia Reiner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The All-Pro Eagles running back said the White House reached out to his management team several months ago about the opportunity, but added he is not “too familiar” with it. Due to his busy schedule with the upcoming NFL season, he declined the invite.
“Was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned, but I’m assuming it’s something great,” said Barkley. “So, I appreciate it. But was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.”
The Council is part of an executive order Trump signed last week.
It aims to “create school-based programs to reward excellence in physical education and support the development of a Presidential Fitness Award – working in partnership with athletes, coaches, teams, and schools to champion access to fitness and healthy living for all Americans.”
Others invited to serve on the Council include Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who was in attendance when the executive order was being signed, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
