Basketball runs in the family at St. Joseph’s University, where Men’s Associate Head Coach Justin Scott mentors his stepson, sophomore guard Xzayvier Brown, writes Gabriella Galati for 6abc.

Their story started on the court.

“We were running a summer camp, and he was a camper,” said Scott. “He was a great kid more than anything. He was a leader in camp, he listened to directions, he was always trying to get better.”

The coach recognized the boy’s mother from church, so he asked a mutual friend for an introduction. The rest, he said, is history.

By the time he had become a more significant figure in Brown’s life, the boy was already fully immersed in the sport of basketball.

“He just listened, he was a sponge,” said Scott. “He wanted to be around the game.”

Their bond grew stronger through their shared love of the sport, making St. Joseph’s an easy choice for Brown, a standout at Roman Catholic High School, to play college basketball.

“He would never say, ‘Oh, you have to come here,’” recalled Brown. “He let me be his son and choose what I wanted to choose.”
