Main Line Health COO Earns Patent for Life-Saving Invention

Main Line Health COO Barbara Wadsworth earns a patent for a sensor-based fall-prevention device to protect patients in care facilities.

Main Line Health Executive VP and COO, Barbara Wadsworth, is now a U.S. patent holder for a life-saving medical device, writes Main Line Times & Suburban.

Wadsworth’s invention was developed in partnership with Wynnewood’s Lankenau Institute for Medical Research to prevent patient falls. Last month, she received a patent for her invention.

The device uses smart sensors to detect when a patient is falling and deploys a portable airbag-style cushion to protect them.

For Wadsworth, who joined Main Line Health in thirteen years ago, this milestone stems from a simple idea that sparked in 2019. She envisioned a solution to a problem that causes over 250,000 injuries and 11,000 deaths annually.

“This is an exciting step,” Wadsworth said. “I never dreamed that the idea I had been pondering could become reality.”

LIMR’s innovation pipeline includes several frontline-driven inventions, like the Essex Privacy Screen, which promotes bathroom safety without compromising patient dignity.
