St. Joseph’s University’s Luke Gabrysh will continue his baseball career with the Philadelphia Phillies after being drafted in the 15th round by his childhood ballclub, writes Ben Silver for the Main Line Today.
Gabrysh has been in love with the game since youth, when he was always one of the best players.
“I’ve always loved baseball, but [Coach Bob Waters] instilled in me that I had a God-given talent and that if I put in the work and the dedication that I could do something with baseball in the long run,” he said.
He began his career as a center fielder and shortstop and later focused solely on pitching – in fact he earned first-team All-State and All-Conference honors as a high school shortstop.
He committed to Saint Joseph’s University, where he became a full-time pitcher. His first year was rough, but he stayed determined and went on to dominate the Perfect Game Collegiate League the following season. When he found out he had been drafted by his favorite team, he was overjoyed.
“It didn’t really feel real because, I mean, it’s something that I’ve always dreamed of,” he said.
