Nationwide Data Breach Hits Lower Merion School District

Lower Merion was among the districts affected by a BoardDocs data breach that exposed over 60K confidential school files nationwide.

Officials confirmed software used by the Lower Merion School District has suffered a data breach, writes William Bender for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Diligent Corp., the vendor behind the widely used BoardDocs platform, admitted this week to a software misconfiguration. The breach exposed Lower Merion documents along with over 60,000 other districts across North America.

For Lower Merion, documents dating back to 2017, including employee information, student issues, and legal memos, were made public without warning. The district learned of the issue in April when a third party discovered sensitive content and alerted officials.

Lower Merion officials say they promptly contacted Diligent, who resolved the issue and brought in outside experts to assess the breach.

Diligent has since begun notifying school districts directly, but some clients said they only learned of the problem after initiating contact themselves.

Lower Merion continues to use BoardDocs, but has made clear they would seek damages if the fallout grows.
