Pennsylvania Bird Town, a National Audubon Society spin-off program, was granted the designation to the Montgomery County township at a recent meeting.

Before submitting an official application to the group’s outreach committee, Towamencin’s environmental advisory committee made a presentation to Towamencin’s Board of Supervisors. Following that the Board approved the township’s participation in the program last month.

Bird Town and the Audubon Society will collaborate with the township to showcase its ecological diversity and wildlife resources. They will also educate homeowners on making their properties more bird-friendly.

Other PA Bird Town members have also received native plant pop-up gardens, community science programs, and invasive species removal programs, as well as community bird walks and stormwater management assistance.

Towamencin is the 77th Pennsylvania municipality to receive the Bird Town designation and the 17th in Montgomery County. It joins Abington, Jenkintown, Cheltenham, Hatfield, Horsham, Lower Frederick, Lower Gwynedd, Lower Providence, Marlborough, Perkiomen, Springfield, Upper Dublin, Upper Moreland, Upper Salford, West Norriton, and Red Hill.

A thriving bird ecosystem benefits the environment by allowing plants to flourish while helping reduce the mosquito and tick populations.
