Haraz Coffee House has been serving traditional Middle Eastern drinks with sun-dried coffee beans in more than a dozen locations throughout the country.
While Detroit and New York City have the main cities where Yemeni coffee shops have flourished, Philadelphia could eventually join the list as a new storefront has opened in University City, writes Michaela Althouse for PhillyVoice.
Philadelphia’s Haraz Coffee House is owned by wife and husband duo, Farah Khan and Hamza Shaikh.
During a trip to Michigan a few years ago, they became exposed to Yemeni coffee shops.
“There are a lot of specifically Yemeni coffee shops there and we went to almost all of them when we were there,” Khan said.
The couple liked the shops’ long hours, trendiness, large dessert menus, and focus on table service. They also noticed that Philadelphia didn’t have something like this.
So, they took it upon themselves.
Their hope is that Haraz Coffee House will serve as a social gathering spot for people separate from work and home.
At Haraz, you can expect a variety of made-to-order drinks heated on a stove, such as Adeni chai, Turkish coffee, and a variety of espresso bar drinks.
The food menu includes pistachio and saffron milk cakes, fudgy mosaic cakes, brownies, and more.
