Montgomery County officials and nonprofit leaders gathered in Lansdale to kick off plans for a new short-term housing facility, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
The facility aims to support people experiencing homelessness. Located at 1107 E. Main Street, the former office space will be transformed into a shelter with wraparound services, thanks to a partnership between the county and Philadelphia-based nonprofit Resources for Human Development (RHD).
“This is a tremendous moment for progress in housing security,” said County Commissioner Chair Neil Makhija. The facility is expected to open in fall 2025, offering not just shelter but also food, mental health support, job training, and access to permanent housing.
Commissioner Jamila Winder emphasized the county’s growing homelessness crisis—over 500 people were estimated unsheltered in 2025—and praised Lansdale for leading by example. “No one should be living on the streets in Montgomery County,” she said.
Lansdale’s initiative is part of a broader county strategy that includes a lease for over 60 hotel rooms in Pottstown and long-term plans for multiple facilities. The county has committed more than $6 million to this effort in its 2025 budget.
